Interoception: Can be your Inner Compass for Menopause
As we transition through menopause, we experience so many significant changes in our bodies, that can cause quite a bit of confusion and frustration.
If you ever felt like you're disconnected from your body and all that is happening inside of it. Not knowing what is going on and why. Interoception can help. It is like an inner compass, helping to guide you through the changes of menopause. It's about tuning into your body's signals, understanding your emotions, and cultivating a deeper sense of self-awareness.
Why is Interoception Important for Menopausal Women?
As we navigate the hormonal fluctuations and physical changes of menopause, interoception can help us to:
Reduce stress: Connect with your inner self, fostering a sense of calm and reducing stress.
Improve overall well-being: By connecting with your inner self, we can foster a greater sense of peace, balance, and self-awareness, thus cultivating a deeper connection with your body, enhancing overall quality of life.
Better understand our body's signals: By becoming more attuned to our internal sensations, we can better understand the changes our body is going through and then put helpful practices in place.
Improve self-regulation: Interoception can help us manage stress, anxiety, and mood fluctuations, which most (if not all) of us experience during menopause.
How to Enhance Your Interoception
Pay attention to your body: Notice your sensations, emotions, and thoughts throughout the day.
Mindful body scan: Lie down or sit comfortably. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Gradually shift your attention to different parts of your body, noticing any sensations or tension.
Heart-centred breathing: Place your hand on your heart and feel the rhythm. Breathe slowly and deeply, focusing on the rise and fall of your chest.
Sensory awareness: Engage your senses one at a time. Notice the sounds around you, the textures of your clothes, the taste of your food.
Emotion tracking: Throughout the day, pause and check in with your emotions. Notice any physical sensations associated with them, such as tightness in your chest or a racing heart.
Nature connection: Spend time in nature, connecting with the elements and your surroundings.
Empowering Yourself Through Interoception
It is important to notice and practice without judgement. We are not growing a stronger connection to and a sense of self to judge it or condemn where we are at. We are practicing interoception to simply understand our bodies better. And with a better understanding comes the capacity to be less frustrated and confused.
By incorporating interoception into your daily routine, you're taking an active role in your well-being. It's a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, helping you navigate menopause with greater confidence and grace.
